ASUS RTX 4060 Ti DUAL SSD with Crucial Gen5 SSD: 12GB/sec+ with M.2 on the GPU

Anthony Garreffa | Nov 24, 2023 7:47 PM CST

ASUS recently teased its GeForce RTX 4060 Ti DUAL SSD graphics card with an M.2 slot on the back, but now the team at ASUS have been toying with it... using the M.2 slot to make a GeForce RTX 4090 act as an external GPU, as well as throwing a Gen5 M.2 SSD inside and rocking huge speeds through the GPU.

ASUS RTX 4060 Ti DUAL SSD with Crucial Gen5 SSD: 12GB/sec+ with M.2 on the GPU

We've got ASUS China Product Manager, Tony Yu, playing with the ASUS RTX 4060 Ti DUAL SSD... where he not only used the aforementioned RTX 4090 as an external GPU, but plugged in both a Gen4 and Gen5 M.2 SSD into the back side of the GPU and ran some storage tests... with some rather surprising results, I've got to admit.

The Crucial T700 Gen5 SSD was installed into the M.2 slot, because ASUS has tweaked the PCB and included a Gen5 connector on the card. The RTX 4060 Ti itself uses the Gen4 standard, but the M.2 slot on the back is ready to rock and roll with those 12GB/sec+ glorious speeds that only Gen5 can do. With the Crucial T700 Gen5 4TB SSD installed, ASUS proudly showed off an incredible 12.4GB/sec reads, and 11.7GB/sec writes... all from the back of its RTX 4060 Ti DUAL SSD graphics card.

TeamGroup's new T-Force Siren GD120S AIO SSD cooler: an AIO cooler, for your SSD

The new T-FORCE SIREN GD120S AIO Cooler is a unique all-in-one liquid cooling solution for PCIe 2280 SSDs that uses exclusive patented technology, with the SSD water block fitting perfectly with M.2 2280 SSDs that provides next-level cooling, allowing super-fast SSDs to maintain huge transfer speeds without throttling due to thermals.

This is perfect for new, super-fast Gen5 SSDs... TeamGroup tested its SIREN GD120 on a PCIe 5.0 SSD that was able to stay under 54C even during heavy loads. TeamGroup explains its new T-FORCE SIREN GD120S AIO SSD Cooler, saying it "boasts excellent cooling performance by equipping the precision aluminum alloy dual-tube water blocks with double-layered thermal pads, which allow the SSD controller chip and IC to be tightly affixed to the copper base of the cooler. The pump utilizes a ceramic shaft design and three silent motors to achieve silent, highly efficient, and stable liquid cooling".

Silicon Motion's new PCIe 5.0 SSD controller will use faster and more efficient 6nm process

Kosta Andreadis | Nov 15, 2023 11:01 PM CST

Silicon Motion's SM2508 PCIe 5.0 SSD controller is destined to power some of the best upcoming Gen5 SSDs thanks to it using TSMC's 6nm process. Compared to the 12nm process found in controllers from the competition, the switch to 6nm should offer a 45% decrease in power reduction for faster and more efficient performance with speeds of up to 14.5 GB/s.

Silicon Motion's new PCIe 5.0 SSD controller will use faster and more efficient 6nm process

The company shared more details on its upcoming SM2508 PCIe 5.0 SSD controller at the Memory Trend Seminar 2023 event in Shenzhen, China. Here, Silicon Motion announced that it will use a more advanced process node, giving it the edge over something like Phison's E26 controller. Previously, we reported on Silicon Motion's SM2508 PCIe 5.0 SSD controller during Flash Memory Summit 2023.

Silicon Motion's SM2508 features an Arm-based processor with four Cortex-R8 cores clocked at up to 1.25 GHz with a single Cortex-M0 core and intelligent power management - a decision made to hit the right balance between performance and power consumption. Silicon Motion is saying that the SM2508 controller draws less than 3.5W.

SABRENT's new 5-Bay USB-C Docking Station looks like a cryo-chamber for 2.5-inch HDDs and SSDs

Kosta Andreadis | Nov 12, 2023 8:04 PM CST

Hard drive docking stations are a great way to easily access data stored on older drives that you do not need to install and connect directly to a motherboard. Pop the drive-in, fire up the docking station, and you have instant data access. But, when you add up all of the features and capabilities of Sabrent's new 5-Bay USB-C Docking Station for 2.5" SATA HDDs and SSDs - you've got a pretty powerful and affordable external storage solution.

SABRENT's new 5-Bay USB-C Docking Station looks like a cryo-chamber for 2.5-inch HDDs and SSDs

Powered by USB-C, the transfer speed fully uses the USB 3.2 Gen 2 connection with 10Gbps on offer, bolstered by the included power adapter to ensure a stable and reliable connection while in use. Throw in an 80mm fan to keep the drives cool, and the overall look is reminiscent of a cryo-chamber or that thing Darth Vader sits in when he gets his helmet taken off in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.

The Sabrent 5-Bay USB-C Docking Station for 2.5" SATA HDDs and SSDs (DS-5R15) supports up to five 2.5-inch drives, which can be used independently or simultaneously with tool-free plug-and-play hot-swappable functionality.
